Surat and Mumbai are close enough that many families move between them for work, business or study. The distance is not the hard part of this move. What makes a Surat to Mumbai shift different is the change in home size, the society rules on both ends, traffic in Mumbai, and the extra planning needed when you are also moving a car or a bike.
This guide walks you through each stage so you can plan a smooth move without surprises.
Plan the timing first
Mumbai is roughly 280 km from Surat by road. With a dedicated truck, goods loaded in Surat in the morning can often be unloaded in Mumbai later the same day or early the next morning. In practice the timing depends on a few things you should check before fixing a date:
- Loading time. A full family home takes several hours to pack and load. A large home may need the packing done a day before.
- Entry timings. Goods vehicles face time restrictions in parts of Mumbai. Your movers should plan the trip so the truck reaches your new address when it is allowed to enter and unload.
- Society hours. Your new building may allow shifting only at certain hours. If the truck arrives outside those hours, it will have to wait.
- Your own travel. Try to reach the new home before the truck does, so you can guide the unloading and check the goods.
If you can choose, avoid month-end dates and the festive season, when demand for trucks is high. Mid-month weekdays are usually easier to book.
Expect a smaller home and plan for it
Many families moving from Surat to Mumbai find that their new flat is smaller than the old one, with less storage and smaller rooms. Furniture that fitted easily in Surat may not fit through a Mumbai doorway or into a compact bedroom.
- Ask for the floor plan or measurements of the new flat. Measure the door widths, the lift and the staircase landing.
- Measure your large items: sofa, beds, wardrobes, dining table and fridge.
- Decide early what will not fit, and sell or give it away in Surat. It costs money and space to move something you cannot use.
- Large wardrobes and beds may need to be taken apart. Our furniture dismantling and reassembly team can do this at both ends.
Society rules in Surat and Mumbai
Speak to both societies at least one to two weeks before moving day. Many Mumbai societies have clear shifting rules. Common ones include:
- Fixed hours for shifting, often with no moves on Sundays or late in the evening.
- A booking for the service lift, sometimes with a deposit.
- A no-objection letter from the owner if you are a tenant.
- Registration of the new tenant with the society and, in many cases, police verification for rented homes.
Your Surat society may also need a gate pass or a no-dues letter before goods can leave. Collect these papers in advance so the truck is not held at the gate.
Documents to keep ready
Keep a folder of important papers in your own bag, not in the truck. For a Surat to Mumbai move it should include:
- ID and address proof for everyone in the family.
- Your rent agreement or sale papers for the new home, and the society letters mentioned above.
- Vehicle papers if you are moving a car or bike: registration certificate, insurance and PUC.
- School transfer certificates and medical records.
- Your moving company's quote, receipt, inventory list and the consignment note.
For household goods that cross a state border, your movers will usually prepare the paperwork that travels with the truck. Ask them which details they need from you, such as a declaration of the goods and their approximate value for transit insurance.
Moving your car or bike to Mumbai
If you are taking your vehicle, you can drive it yourself or have it moved by a carrier. Moving it with your household goods means one less job on the day. Before handing it over:
- Note the odometer reading and take clear photos of the vehicle from all sides.
- Remove personal items and accessories that can come loose.
- Keep the fuel level low, as your movers will advise.
- Check the condition report and sign it only after you agree with it.
A vehicle registered in Gujarat that will stay in Maharashtra for the long term will need to follow the re-registration process. Check the current rules with the transport office in Mumbai. You can read more on our car transportation and bike transportation pages.
Setting up utilities and services
Before you leave Surat, settle your final electricity, gas and internet bills and arrange to close or transfer the connections. In Mumbai, ask the owner or society about:
- The electricity supplier for the building and how to transfer the bill to your name.
- Piped gas or the LPG distributor for the area.
- Internet providers that already serve the building, so installation is quicker.
- Water timings, if the building has them.
Update your address with your bank, employer, insurance company and on your Aadhaar once you have proof of the new address.
Packing for an intercity move
An intercity move needs stronger packing than a local shift, because the goods spend longer in the truck and travel over highways. Ask your movers about the packing materials they will use for furniture, appliances, glass and electronics. Pack your valuables, jewellery, cash and documents yourself and carry them with you. Keep a small bag with clothes, medicines, chargers and basic kitchen items for the first night, in case the unloading finishes late.
Our kitchen packing guide and house shifting checklist cover the details step by step.
Choosing movers for Surat to Mumbai
Because this is a busy route, there are many operators offering it. Take the time to check who you are booking:
- Ask for a home survey or a video survey so the quote is based on your actual goods.
- Get the quote in writing, with packing, loading, transport, unloading and any extra charges listed separately.
- Ask whether the truck is dedicated to your goods or shared with other customers, as this affects timing.
- Ask about transit insurance and what it covers.
- Check the company's address, GST details and reviews before paying any advance.

On moving day
- Be present while the goods are packed and loaded. Check the inventory list and keep a copy.
- Note the truck number and the driver's phone number.
- Do a final walk through the Surat home: lofts, cupboards, balcony and parking.
- Hand over the keys and collect any deposit or no-dues letter.
- In Mumbai, guide the team on which room each box goes to, and check the boxes against the list as they come in.
- Report any damage to the movers on the same day, with photos.
With the planning done early, a Surat to Mumbai move can be completed in a day or two, and you can start settling into your new city without stress.
